Disenfranchised grief refers to losses where the mourner's relationship to the deceased, the mourner's loss, or the mourner's ability to grieve is not socially recognized or acknowledged. The purpose of this study was to identify the unique dynamics of different relationship types that affect how individuals may perceive another's loss. The first study focused on social perceptions of gender and sexual orientation by comparing how individuals may perceive the grief of a man or woman losing his or her spouse in either a heterosexual or homosexual relationship. Results from this study suggest that homosexual individuals may actually be perceived to grieve more intensely than heterosexual couples when losing a spouse. The second study similarly focused on the social perceptions of marital status and child loss a by comparing how individuals perceive the grief of a single or married woman mourning the loss of her unborn child after either a miscarriage or abortion. Results from this study suggest that women who end their pregnancy through an abortion are perceived to grieve less intensely than women who miscarry. Potential explanations for these ratings are also discussed with implications for practicing counselors to better understand and identify disenfranchised grief to better support grieving clients. -from the abstract
